An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Advanced Nurse Practitioner to join our dedicated and friendly team at St Helens Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC).
The post holder will work autonomously as a senior nurse within the UTC team, seeing patients of all ages with undifferentiated and undiagnosed health problems; triage, taking comprehensive histories, undertaking clinical examinations, diagnosing, planning & implementing care, prescribing medication and making referrals where appropriate.
You will be the shift co-coordinator responsible for the day to day running of the UTC including supervising and supporting junior staff.

The Urgent Treatment Centre is located in the heart of St Helens centre and sees around 65,000 patients annually.
The centre has onsite x-ray and pharmacy facilities. The staff work closely with both primary and secondary care to provide a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
The band 7 advanced nurse practitioner works autonomously as a senior nurse within the UTC team, seeing patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed health problems: triage, taking comprehensive histories,
undertaking clinical examinations, diagnosing, planning & implementing car, prescribing medication and making referrals where appropriate.
The band 7 advanced nurse practitioner is the shift co-coordinator responsible for the day to day running of the UTC including supervising and supporting junior staff.

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.
Specialist Regional Services
We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

KEY DUTIES
• Co-ordinate and deliver the day-to-day management of the clinical team as team/shift leader.
• Act as a resource for other members of the UTC clinical team.
• In collaboration with the Team Leaders promote the development and effectiveness of the nurse-led service utilizing a multi-skilled team approach.
• Maintain effective channels of communication both within the UTC and across the wider health and social care economy.
• Promote and maintain the quality and standards of St Helens UTC services in accordance with organisational and Trust Clinical Governance requirements.
• Facilitate a culture, which promotes and maintains best practice utilising current and best evidence.
• Participate in and initiate clinical audit as required.
CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• To work autonomously using advanced levels of history taking and examination skills within a multidisciplinary team, guidelines, and protocols
• Assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate treatment/interventions and care for patients presenting with an undifferentiated diagnosis.
• Advise and communicate as appropriate with acute hospitals, primary and social care and community teams thus ensuring seamless continuity and transfer of care for patients between other relevant health, social and third sector agencies, professionals, and other care settings.
• Demonstrate a high level of knowledge in relation to the management of minor illness, injury and chronic disease.
• Be able to assess critically and re-evaluate the clinical situation as the patient’s condition changes.
• Facilitate learning for patients and their careers in relation to their identified health needs. Provide health promotion and promote optimal self-care as appropriate.
• Undertake a range of clinical procedures, which may include, suturing, venepuncture, cannulation, ear syringing, slit lamp use, removal of foreign bodies.
• Identify at risk patients and manage appropriately in accordance with national and local policy and procedures i.e., vulnerable children, adults, and child protection.
• Contribute to investigations of incidents and complaints when required, participate in identifying lessons learnt and the sharing of learning across the organisation.
• Always ensure the safety of self and others and promote a safety culture through the effective management of risk in the Woking environment.
• Promote people’s equality, diversity, and rights. Provide high quality innovative clinical practice. Be proactive in clinical decision making, underpinned by an advanced level of theoretical and practical knowledge and able to demonstrate improved patient care outcomes.
• To always act as an advocate for patients, carers and relatives.
• Offer a complementary service to that of other health care providers within the local health economy.
• Utilizing own professional knowledge and skills, act as a resource for other members of the UTC team
• Empower colleagues and clients and demonstrate the ability to facilitate effective clinical practice based on best evidence.
• Possess a clear understanding of legal and ethical issues, professional accountability, and responsibility.
REGISTERED PRESCRIBERS
• Prescribe medication safely and effectively to patients, as an Independent Non-Medical/ Supplementary prescriber.
• Prescribe and review medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patients needs in accordance with evidence-based practice and national and practice protocols, and within scope of practice.
• Work with patients to support compliance with and adherence to prescribed treatments. Provide information and advice on prescribed or over the counter medication regimes, side effects and interactions.
• To understand the legislation relevant to the practice of Independent Non-medical / supplementary prescribing.
• Maintain a professional portfolio and demonstrate that practice is up to date and evidence based.
LEADERSHIP
• Provide clinical leadership in relation to the management of patient condition working at an advanced level to provide mentoring, supervision and clinical advice where required to the UTC team.
• Delegate responsibility where appropriate and encourage a culture where flexibility and adaptability are positively encouraged.
• Adopt and promote a positive approach to change.
• Actively participate in and promote the development of professional nursing practice.
• Manage team dynamics when performing the role of team leader.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
• Maintain effective systems of communication and referral both within the UTC and across primary and secondary care.
• Promote and maintain effective comprehensive clinical documentation in accordance with local and NMC guidelines for record keeping.
• Utilise the Trust e-mail communication system.
• Utilise a variety of systems to communicate clinical information in accordance with the requirements of the data protection act (telephone, letter and email)
TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES
• Participate and engage in the identification of education and training needs of the team.
• Demonstrate a positive commitment to the training and education of pre and post.
• Identify and disseminate best practice through evidence, clinical guidelines, and benchmarking.
• Maintain and develop own clinical and professional expertise by participation in Clinical Supervision and Personal Development Planning, in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of conduct, and scope of professional Practice.
• Provide supervision and mentoring opportunities for St Helens UTC team members and students.
• Participate in formal and informal teaching sessions to promote clinical excellence within the UTC team.
LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Supervise and maintain high standards of professional care in accordance with current NMC Code of Professional Conduct, Scope of Professional Practice, and ethical considerations.
• Provide a supportive environment for staff, take responsibility for, and perform in clinics supervision and personal development planning.
• Assist the Clinical Service Manager in shaping and developing a service, which is welcoming and effective to the needs of service users.
• Participate in the development of an effective service utilizing a holistic, health needs approach.
• Participate in the development, implementation and monitoring of policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines as appropriate.
• Supervision of the supply of medicines by junior staff as appropriate via PGD.
• Manage and co-ordinate medicine stock control.
RESEARCH & AUDIT
• Promote a research culture within the UTC, and actively promote the use, publication, and dissemination of research evidence.
• Promotes, develops and undertakes clinical audit to support own and the team’s best practice, which is researched, and evidence based leading to continuous improvement in care.
