A Vacancy at Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Practice Educator – Sleep and Respiratory Physiology (Band 7) at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. This role is pivotal in leading educational development, training, and clinical practice improvements within the Sleep and Respiratory Physiology team.
The postholder will work in a leadership capacity, overseeing the development and expansion of the service, ensuring high standards of patient care, and facilitating the professional growth of the physiology and technical team. Key responsibilities include developing and implementing training programs, managing educational initiatives, and supporting staff in gaining relevant competencies in sleep diagnostics, therapies, and lung function testing.
Additionally, the postholder will have line management duties, oversee external training collaborations, and deputise for the Sleep Physiology Manager as needed. They will play a central role in achieving and maintaining IQIPS accreditation by ensuring staff training, competency assessments, and compliance with best practices.
This role requires strong leadership, communication, and teaching skills, along with extensive experience in sleep and respiratory physiology. It is ideal for a motivated individual passionate about staff development, quality improvement, and patient care excellence.
Flexible working patterns are available including hybrid remote and onsite working.
The Clinical Practice Educator – Sleep and Respiratory Physiology will take on a leadership role in developing and delivering training initiatives while supporting the growth of the service. They will oversee staff education, implement structured training programmes, mentor apprentices, and collaborate with external education providers to enhance learning opportunities. The postholder will provide day-to-day supervision and management of the physiology and technical team, ensuring professional development through appraisals, competency assessments, and mentorship. They will also maintain high standards of patient care by overseeing clinical activities, providing specialist advice, and contributing to IQIPS accreditation, audits, and research. Workforce and service planning will be a key responsibility, ensuring the efficient management of training resources while supporting policy and service improvements to drive excellence in sleep and respiratory physiology.

• Leadership
o Lead the development and implementation of educational strategies within the Sleep and Respiratory Unit, particularly Development of training strategies.
o Oversee and manage the allocation and support of both student physiologists but also students visiting QVH undertaking elective placement
o Provide clinical education and training whilst demonstrating awareness of cultural diversity in the workplace and the need to adapt training/support accordingly.
o Support and facilitate all staff in expanding their clinical skills and knowledge in keeping with professional and organisational requirements.
o Provide feedback which is constructive and supportive from observation and assessment in line with Trust policies and procedures.
o Assist with the monitoring and reporting on the levels of skills required and the gap in skills acquisition for all staff.
o To manage the learning needs of staff by integrating individual needs into service requirements.
o Play a central role in achieving and maintaining IQIPS accreditation through staff training and competency assessments.
o Ensure legislation, Trust policies and procedures and professional requirements are applied and delivered through all facilitation sessions.
o Act as a resource for advice and clinical support for learners, students, and team members.
o Facilitate staff development by integrating service requirements into individual training plans.
• Education and Training
o Demonstrate excellent communication skills to provide and receive complex information; with the ability to influence, negotiate and network with key stakeholders to develop and support clinical placements conducive to effective, evidence based learning and best practice.
o Be a role model and lead by example to ensure that the dignity, rights and confidentiality of the patient and individual team members are protected and maintained in accordance with national standards and guidelines.
o To collaborate with external education providers, to initiate new training provision where a departmental training need is not met.
o To communicate effectively with the department on training issues and provide constructive, accurate and factual observation feedback to students, newly registered and existing staff and facilitate learning and support.
o Coordinate clinical training for undergraduate and postgraduate learners, ensuring compliance with professional and IQIPS standards.
o Deliver formal training on lung function testing, sleep studies and CPAP/NIV therapies.
o Implement educational initiatives to meet the standards required for IQIPS accreditation.
o Develop e-learning tools and in-person training packages tailored to sleep, respiratory, and lung function practices.
o Foster a positive culture of continuous professional development within the team through regular workshops, mentorship and structured feedback
o Liaise with educational institutions to provide tailored learning opportunities for students.
• Clinical Oversight
o Provide specialist advice on complex cases in sleep and respiratory care.
o Support the application of advanced lung function testing techniques, such as spirometry, gas transfer, lung volume measurement, and reversibility testing.
o Participate in clinical audits and research to maintain evidence-based practices.
o Ensure compliance with Trust policies, procedures, and accreditation standards in all training activities.
o Assess and analyse a range of options to advise individuals on learning opportunities including courses or study days that will promote their professional development plans and ensure compliance with appraisal outcomes.
o Critically analyse practice and use knowledge to support evidence based practice.
o Review the Training Programme regularly to ensure that it meets the needs of the department and individual. Agree any changes required.
• Planning & Organisation
o Develop and manage training programs to meet departmental needs.
o Organise and deliver multi-disciplinary teaching sessions on sleep physiology, lung function testing, and respiratory care.
o Collaborate on workforce planning to address skills gaps and meet IQIPS requirements, using competency frameworks and gap analysis.
o Organise the delivery of a complex programme of training and educational opportunities within the Trust and department.
o Plan and deliver educational training sessions.
o To oversee the management of elective students on placement and follow process to ensure they are able to gain a positive experience.
o Provide information about courses and study days to meet the training needs and objectives of individuals and the department in line with the Trust Strategy and values.
o Seek opportunities to deliver training via e-learning where appropriate.
o Attend and participate in the Trusts Education Leads and Practice Development Group meetings. Provide feedback from such sessions to meetings and mentor meetings.
• Responsability for Patient Care
o To work alongside staff of all levels to provide specialised advice, support and training, acting as a role model when possible.
o To deliver direct patient care and to understand the importance of safe management in all aspects of patient care.
o To work clinically in line with Trust and directorate objectives to plan, deliver and evaluate care to a high standard, within own role expertise when possible.
o Work flexibly supporting staff in the delivery of high quality care, ensuring continuous improvement of patient experience and outcomes.
o To provide a point of contact and support for all learners.
• Responsibility for Policy Development
o Support senior staff in the implementation of change as appropriate, proposing service developments that impact across the Trust.
o To identify the requirements and draft new policies, review existing policies regularly, particularly in support of training and clinical issues, ensuring governance and best practice.
o Contribute to updating policies related to education, patient care, and safety, with a focus on IQIPS standards.
o Identify and propose changes to service delivery strategies to enhance patient care and align with IQIPS accreditation goals
o To determine a departmental training strategy and review the effectiveness and areas for improvement on a regular basis providing reports where required.
• Responsibility for Human Resources
o Manage the delivery of a complex programme of training and educational opportunities within the Trust and department, with support from senior staff.
o To arrange teaching for staff as necessary, using radiography staff, other disciplines within the department, Trust and outside education providers as appropriate.
o To guide and support qualified, Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors in facilitation of an effective learning environment to promote an ethos of clinical governance towards evidence based clinical practice.
• Responsibility for Information Resources
o Prepare reports on activities and progress to support the evaluation of the role.
o Ensures that all training records are maintained, accurate and updated in a timely manner.
o Support appraisals and competency assessments for team members, particularly in preparation for IQIPS accreditation.
o Provide constructive feedback and mentorship to junior staff, ensuring their professional growth.
• Responsibility for Research & Development
o To undertake annual education audit.
o Work with other Clinical Educators to produce articles for publication.
• Personal and Professional Development
o Participate in the Trust’s annual appraisal and personal development plan system.
o Participate in the Trust’s annual pay progression review (if applicable).
o Ensure that all mandatory training is up to date.
o The post holder will be responsible for continually maintaining their working knowledge of local practices, policies and procedures and highlight ongoing training and development needs to their manager.
o Achieve or maintain a teaching qualification (e.g., PGCert in Clinical Education).
o Participate in the Trust’s annual appraisal and personal development plan system.
o Keep up-to-date with advances in sleep, respiratory, and lung function diagnostics and treatments.
o Attend and contribute to national and international conferences on sleep and respiratorycare.
